Healthier Halloween Treats

We all love a sweet treat on Halloween- and you SHOULD enjoy it!

Giving into a craving does not mean you've failed. It actually means that you have a healthy relationship with food and you'll be less likely to want to indulge again.

So satisfy that craving, move on with your life, and add in some health promotion, too!


*Devil Eggs Chocolate Bark*

(Cinnamon and Pomegranate Seed Dark Chocolate Bark)

Ingredients:

-5 drops dōTERRA OnGuard essential oil (can sub ground clove, cinnamon, rosemary, + orange zest, but flavor will not be as forward)

-1/4c + 1tbsp cacao powder

-1/2c coconut oil

-1/2c pomegranate arils

-1/8c (heaping) honey (local if possible)

Health Benefits:

-cleansing properties, supports immune health

-Powerful anti-inflammatory agent with antioxidants + flavonoids

-good source of omega fatty acids to promote brain health

-high in potassium, vitamin K, and vitamin C

-antiseptic properties, blood sugar friendly sweetener, could help lessen the severity of seasonal allergies


Preparation:

-On a double boiler or in the microwave for short bursts, melt coconut oil

-Remove from heat, stir in cacao powder + OnGuard essential oil (or spices/zest)

-Stir until mixture is consistent throughout and no cacao powder is left dry

-Spread the mixture on a parchment lined baking sheet (or dish that will fit in your freezer) no more than 1/4in thick

-Sprinkle pomegranate arils over top, pressing them into the bark gently so they stick but show their color/don't get coated

-Place in the freezer until hardened. Remove and break apart OR remove before fully firm and cut into shapes carefully using a knife or cookie cutter and return to freeze completely.

-Keep frozen until ready to serve. Once broken, store in a freezer safe plastic bag


*Dracula's Drunken Punch *for responsible adults 21+**

(Fresh Cran-raspberry Spiked Superfood Punch)

Ingredients:

-2c 100% cranberry juice

-2c tart black cherry juice

-1-2c fresh raspberries

-2 fresh limes

-1/4-1/2c gin

-2c/16oz coconut water

-1/4c grenadine

-plastic fangs

Health Benefits:

-aids in detoxifying the kidneys + urinary tract

-high in calcium, potassium, and magnesium, also improves melatonin production

-contain fiber, vitamin C, and act as a natural sweetener

-contain vitamin C, beta carotene, and small traces of essential amino acids

-juniper berries, the main component of gin, may suppress gastrointestinal upset as well as inflammation + could aid in the body's detoxification process

-rehydrates the body with concentrated electrolytes + no added sugar

-made from pomegranates (so double the benefits) + acts as a sweetener

Preparation:

-In a large pitcher or punch bowl, stir together juices, coconut water, and grenadine

-Juice your limes into a blender + add raspberries. Blend until a puree is made

-Stir your puree, grenadine, and gin into the punch, chill before serving

-Wash plastic fangs with dish soap + allow to dry, drop them straight into the punch bowl or into everyone's cup before serving


*Maple Glazed Gooey Carrot Fingers*

(Stove-top Maple Glazed Carrots)

Ingredients:

-6 large carrots

-1/4c pure maple syrup

-1/2c + 1/4c vegetable stock

Health Benefits:

-high in beta carotene, lutein, and vitamin A for eye health

-slightly better blood sugar regulation that sugar, contains zinc + fall flavor

-easier on the digestive tract than animal proteins, can make at home with veggie scraps

Preparation:

-Peel + cut carrots in half. Add "knuckles" and "fingernails" to the thinner end with your knife if desired

-Place them in a skillet with 1/2c vegetable stock. Cover with a lid + bring the stock to a boil to steam the carrots

-Once all the liquid is dissolved, remove the lid and add 1/4c vegetable stock + maple syrup to the skillet. Stir to combine and place the lid back on

-Cook until the liquid left in the pan is thick + the carrots are cooked through. If more liquid is needed, add stock + maple syrup in by the tablespoon

-Stir the carrots around to coat them in the syrup mixture + serve hot


*Frankenstein's Fiber-licious Marshmallow Treats*

(Spiced Apple Bran + Oat Marshmallow Bars)

Ingredients:

-2 medium Granny Smith apples (diced, skin on- I only had Gala which is also delicious)

-2c bran flakes (plain- not frosted or flavored)

-2c oats

-6tbsp vegetable oil

-2 10oz bags of marshmallows

-dash of sea salt

-splash of vanilla extract

-1tsp each: ground nutmeg, allspice, ginger, + cardamom

-1tbsp ground cinnamon

-3-5 drops green food coloring if desired

Health Benefits:


-high in fiber, complex carbohydrates, + loads of nutrients/electrolytes

-high in fiber + complex carbohydrates to keep you full + provide energy

-high in fiber, complex carbohydrates, iron, and protein

-good source of heart-healthy unsaturated fat

-no health benefit but they're delicious and the other ingredients are highly health promoting

-provides sodium to replace electrolytes + balances ingredients

-contains some antioxidants + flavonols

-anti-inflammatory spices promote circulation and can help regulate body temperature

-again, no health benefit and I don't recommend it as added dyes are not strongly regulated by the FDA, but it does make it more fun for littles!

Preparation:

-In a pot on the stove, heat oil over low heat + add spices and vanilla extract to toast + strengthen the flavors

-Once aromatic, add the marshmallows and melt, stirring often

-Once the marshmallows are melted, stir in bran flakes, oats, and apples

-Gently pack into a greased or foil lined baking dish + allow to set for a few hours out of direct sunlight or in the fridge

-Cut into squares to serve, store extras in an air-tight container
